Natural rubber latex NRLderived from the Hevea brasiliensis tree, is a material used to manufacture products in health care, including medical gloves. Proteins are a naturally occurring component of NRL. These proteins, which can be present on the surface of NRL gloves, have been related to hypersensitivity reactions in some humans who come into contact with them.
Natural rubber latex used as drug delivery system in guided bone regeneration GBR. In this work, we propose natural rubber latex NRL membranes as a protein delivery system. For this purpose Bovine Serum Albumin BSA was incorporated into the latex solution for in vitro protein delivery experiments.
Mallard Creek Polymers is a global leader in the production of water-based emulsion polymers, another term for a variety of synthetic latex polymers constructed for a wide array of markets and applications. Often, when manufacturers are sourcing and procuring raw materials, they like to investigate the differences between natural and synthetic alternatives. With some types of raw materials, sourcing natural products is almost always a better option.
Natural rubber latex is used in the manufacture of various FDA-regulated products, such as condoms and medical gloves. Here, a physical science technician inspects medical gloves in related integrity testing at an FDA laboratory in Irvine, CA. For this and other FDA photos, go to Flickr.

Chemically speaking, a latex is a dispersion of extremely small particles of an insoluble liquid or solid material in a liquid. The particles are almost always polymeric, and the liquid is usually water. Most latexes also contain a surfactant to keep the dispersion stable. Water-based paint is a latex, and so are the starting materials used to make ordinary rubber gloves.
Latex is natural rubber, a product made primarily from the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis. Some people develop allergic reactions after repeated contact with latex, especially latex gloves. Allergy to latex is an increasing health problem.
The term latex is often used as a synonym for rubber, but the term actually refers to any liquid medium that holds a suspension of tiny polymer particles. Latex is a natural plant substance, but it can also be manufactured by chemical processes. Natural latex is a plant material found most famously in the rubber tree —but it is actually found in almost 10 percent of all plants.
