Mulholland Drive refuses to explain itself or even follow a single plot. It feels like the film is fucking with you on purpose. Mulholland Drive is a film about cinema itself, set within the industry with Hollywood itself as the villain.
Reckoning with that feeling, that idea of permanence, seems a momentous notion for one person to take in, especially looking back now with over a decade-and-a-half having passed by. I mean, when I saw it, I thought it was a masterpiece. But to have critics vote it the best film of the 21st century and, then, in two different polls? I'm in awe.
ABC liked that premise and bought the pitch for that hook alone. Upon watching the pilot that Lynch filmed, however, they were disappointed with the final product and canned it. It lost texture, big scenes and storylines, and there are tape copies of the bad version circulating around.
A Mulholland Dr, a street-sign pertaining to the rolling, twisting road that follows the mountain ridge to the north of Los Angeles and which reaches nearly 50 miles, from just northwest of downtown to the Pacific Ocean. Going west, the first stretch is a made-up road, but then it turns into dirt. Though dangerous for driving because of its many blind curves, the road is celebrated for its immense views — of the city to the south, at night like a jewellery case spilled in neon, etc; to the north, of the dense and overheated San Fernando Valley the place where the porn industry operates ; to the west, of the infinite Pacific; and sometimes to the east, the dusty shimmer of the desert that separates Los Angeles from the rest of the US.
A new season is coming, courtesy of Showtime, after the last ended 26 years ago, and everybody is once again talking about rooms that are red and lodges that are black, ladies who log and dwarfs who dance. Only Mulholland Drive is Twin Peaksor started out that way. It was supposed to be a spin-off. There was no Twin Peaks third season, so there was no Mulholland.
